 Bishop Charles J. Williams, Sr.

Bishop

Bishop Charles James Williams, Sr. was born in Wayne County.  His father was a saw mill worker and a sharecropper and his mother was a house wife.

He graduated from Shaw University with a Bachelor of Arts Degree.  He also graduated from Shaw Divinity School  with a Master of Divinity Degree.  He graduated from International Bible Training Institute and Seminary earning a Doctor of Ministry Degree.

He was elected as Presiding Bishop of the Western Assembly in 1977 at the age of 35 and was the youngest Bishop out of 12 that had ever been elected.  During his tenure as Bishop the Assembly purchased 43 acres of land on Highway 701, near Newton Grove, North Carolina.

Bishop Williams has been the pastor White Oak Disciples of Christ Church for over 40 years and the pastor of Juniper Grove Disciples of Christ Church for over 30 years.

Bishop Williams founded the Western Assembly Usher’s Convention and the Western Assembly Bible Training Institute.  Several auxiliaries, boards, committees and groups have been organized in his administration.  He gives God credit for all of his accomplishments and he has experience several life-threatening encounters and acknowledges that had it not been for the goodness and mercies of God he could not have survived them.

June 1, 2013, Bishop Williams will be inducted into the Shaw University Alumni Hall of Fame.  Listen to Bishop Williams on his selection to Shaw University Hall of Fame - Clink link
