The first Sunday School Convention was held on October 26-30, 1920 at Juniper Grove Disciple Church under the leadership of Rev. Joseph S. Thornton, C. M. Eason, C. O. King, Rev. J. K. Williams, Eartha Lee, Lonnie Chesnutt, Chester Langston, Theodore Warren, John F. Bennett, W. L. Williams, Mrs. Claudia White, and Mrs. Lillie Troublefield.
The aim of the convention was to stimulate the spiritual growth through Bible study. The first session of the Western Disciples Sunday School was held at Juniper Grove Church, Four Oaks North Carolina, Friday before the fifth Sunday in October, 1921. Rev. J. S. Thornton was elected President, Brother C. M. Eason, Vice President, Brother H. A. King, Secretary, Reverend J.B. Byrd, Treasurer.
A few years later Brother C.O. King of Cedar Point Sunday School began the vocal choir singing vocal notes in the convention. Some of the early choir leaders were: Brother Romeo Avery, Sr., Brother York Snead, Brother Angus Bryant, Brother Chester Langston, Sr., and Brother C. 0. King, Brother. Eartha Lee, Brother David Sanders, Brother Elisha Williams and Brother A. Kelly. Vocal choir leaders in late years were: Charlie Sanders, Eartha Lee, Charles Cole, H. Merritt, Sister Osie Williams, Nester Best, Evania Royal, Mable McDaniel, Rufus Langston and Pearl Haley. Since 1920, the convention has grown in membership and finances.
